Erdem Çöloğlu, who wrote an afterword for the book, states: "The Classical style in music coincides with a period when the rational thought represented by the Enlightenment gained strength, and historicity, which would gain its identity in the middle of the next century, emerged, reflecting these values. On one hand, it devalues the counterpoint technique at the core of the previous style and the polyphonic textures it created as an engineering effort contrary to the prevailing principle of simplicity of the period. On the other hand, in an environment of relationships that 19th-century theorists would define as dialectical, it places functional tonality, the increasingly dominant phenomenon of the period, at the center of instrumental music. Of course, it develops new techniques for these purposes. Simplification on the harmonic plane occurs with homophonic textures, where melody and accompaniment are derived from the same sound material, replacing polyphonic textures. In this way, a new hierarchy emerges, guided by functional tonality and 'functional' form. This hierarchy allows for the design of much wider tonal regions than what we observe in the Baroque style. The possibility of modulation to distant tonalities brought by the new tuning system allows for longer work durations and enables the establishment of contrast and similarity relationships between large plans in the structure. Thus, as a result of the interaction between this hierarchy and the dialectical relationship, the sonata form, which is the common formal source of leading genres such as symphony, concerto, and sonata of the period, is born and develops.

Kıvılcım Yıldız describes this process in detail and avoids referring to technical musical terms like sonata form, theme, and tonality as abstract/cold terms. Köksal, who reads the Baroque era as a story of "modernization," first gives a general overview of Western music from its beginnings to the pre-Baroque period under the title "A General Look at Western Music from its Beginning to the Pre-Baroque" before delving into the Baroque era. He then examines Baroque music through periods, countries, and schools, and analyzes the production of individual composers. Another feature of the book is that the periods are discussed not only with text but also with visuals. The book's design was carried out by Ersun Pekin. Pekin transforms the text from a dry music history into an enjoyable read. Mehmet Nemutlu, in his Afterword to Baroque Transformation, evaluates the book as follows: "Aykut Köksal's Baroque Transformation, The Journey of Music's Modernization, is not just a conventional music history text written for specialists. It is also a guiding text that traces the 'Baroque journey' as a whole, with its innovations, significant breakthroughs, roles, changing intellectual background, and the cross-connections between them. It is concise, highlighting the productions, attitudes, and relationships that made the most meaningful contributions to the era. It sheds light on the social, individual, and cultural relationships behind a production of such intensity that it would amaze us even today. Looking at the structure of the book, it is seen that a cross-reading has been made in the context of countries and local cultures. The components that form the identity of Baroque music are discussed with the degree and weight of each's contribution. When it comes to the 17th century, a significant change is observed in the book's systematics: developments previously explained under topic headings and thematic subheadings are summarized under the names of certain composers from this point on. Towards the end of the book, a panoramic view of the entire Baroque period is reached through Corelli, Vivaldi, Rameau, Telemann, Handel, and Bach. He started primary school in Eğin and completed it in Istanbul. From 1963 to 1968, he studied at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Istanbul Technical University (ITU). After graduation, he chose to work in structural design engineering and wrote Turkey's first computer programs in this field. As his knowledge and computer technology developed, so did his programs. Believing that they should be widely used by his colleagues, he made his programs available to the Chamber of Civil Engineers for a period. With the opportunities he created, he designed projects that would have been almost impossible to do by hand in the era of manual calculation, generally outsourced abroad, such as the Pendik Diesel Engine with double cranes operating on the same track, Gebze AEG-ETİ, Aliağa HABAŞ Iron and Steel factories, and UM Marine shipyard, the largest shipbuilding factory in the Middle East, with an 80-meter span and 80-meter height. In addition to heavy industry facilities and shipyard projects, he undertook Turkey's first high-rise buildings such as Akmerkez, Mersin Business Center, and İşbank Headquarters Building. These projects were followed by Istanbul Sapphire, Skyland Istanbul, Ege Perla, Istanbul TV and Radio Tower, and other high-rise buildings. In addition to his work in various cities of Turkey, he worked on numerous projects abroad. He received the Russian State Award for the Russian Tax Office project. In 2001, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at ITU. In 2008, he was honored with the title of Honorary Competent Engineer by the Chamber of Civil Engineers, and in 2019, he received the Contribution to Architecture Award from the Turkish Association of Freelance Architects. Their friendship dates back to their time studying architecture at Istanbul Technical University (1948-1953) and continues to this day. UMO Mimarlık, which they founded in 1955, is still in operation. This long-standing partnership alone is enough to make them special. However, they also hold a special place due to their contributions to the architectural environment in Turkey – particularly in construction technologies. They come from a generation that rejoiced, saying, "Nails are finally being made in Turkey"; despite this, for example, they took an interest in reinforced concrete shells, space frames, and steel structure systems, and went beyond mere interest to pursue the creation of qualified and innovative structures. In 1979, they founded USKON, and in 2000, Çelik Yapı. These companies are also still active. The principles they established for their companies to be both long-lasting and innovative are also of significant importance. Each of them is also a story of institutionalization.

This book, while presenting the architectural journeys of Levent Aksüt and Yaşar Marulyalı, from their university years to the present, woven with personal anecdotes, also reflects the changes that the architecture and construction sectors in Turkey have undergone. The environment in which they received their education, their influences, the principles they acquired, how they transferred these into their own practices, professional organizations, and architectural culture, and what they added to them, constitute the components of the book. The book, which opens with an evaluation article by Doğan Tekeli, one of Turkey's leading architects, is divided into two main sections. In the first section, we begin to get to know Levent Aksüt and Yaşar Marulyalı, learn about the period when they studied architecture, follow their contributions to architectural culture, and discover the activities of UMO Mimarlık, USKON, and Çelik Yapı, which they founded. The second section serves as a catalog with their summary biographies, project indexes, awards, and a selection from their bibliography.

The book for the exhibition “Time Scale / Zaman Cetveli,” which presented Erginoğlu & Çalışlar’s thirty years of architectural production in parallel with the memory of its era, has been published. Ayvansaray Neighborhood, chosen as the work site, is a part of the city with a very special historical topography. The uniqueness of this area stems from both its geographical location and the social structure created by this location. The Historical Peninsula of Istanbul ends at this point in the north and meets the Golden Horn. It is also at the point where the Land Walls of Istanbul end and merge with the Sea Walls of Istanbul. The city walls, which were the borders of medieval cities, separated the inner-center and outer areas. For the city of Istanbul, the Land Walls of Istanbul undertook the task of defining the inner and outer city. Ayvansaray Neighborhood is a threshold space located at the outermost part of the center. The Land Walls of Istanbul lead to this neighborhood being defined as both intra-city and ex-centric. This special physical location has enabled the diversification of social identities living here and led to the formation of a ‘threshold identity’ character socially.

This neighborhood has been an area where various ethnic identities have coexisted from its past to the present. The ‘inner-center’ has pushed social others to its borders. The identities that the center has pushed ‘outward’ are social others; non-Muslims—Greeks, Jews, Roma, and immigrants... However, social otherness has created a positive outcome in this region and has led various ethnic identities to form a culture of coexistence rather than excluding each other as others.

...The discussions with the narrators guided the chapters on the neighborhood. The section ‘About Ayvansaray’ aimed to uncover narratives about the general daily life of the neighborhood from past to present. In the ‘Ayvansaray Baths’ section, the close relationship between the baths and the socio-cultural structure and daily life of the neighborhood is discussed, along with the historical characteristics of the bath structures. In the section titled ‘Celebration Ritual in Ayvansaray’, the wedding ritual, one of the most important rituals of the "Loncalı" identity encountered in the book, is narrated. The section ‘Watching the Past: Arif from Balat’ reveals the urban memory of the region through past places extracted from a cinema film. The section ‘From Worker Cafes to 'Coffee' Shops: Transformation in Ayvansaray’ questions the transformation experienced in the neighborhood's daily life along with its physical fabric, through spaces shaped by production relations. The title ‘Production and City on the Ayvansaray-Balat Axis’ provides an understanding of the coastal economy of the Golden Horn and a cultural identity formed through its socio-economic structure, while also revealing how a micro-economy changes the boundaries of the neighborhood, region, and even the city. Finally, the section ‘The Phenomenon of Converging / Conflicting Space and Identity in the Context of The Pit Series’ focuses on how urban spaces turn into a communication tool in the film industry, accompanied by contemporary urban sociology.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/3950/7395/files/ayvansaraykentselokumadenemesiKAPAK.jpg?v=1764707930
