Its aim is to introduce and demystify the geometry and numerical symbolism observed in Ottoman, Christian, and Jewish religious architecture, and in the design of Masonic Lodges, their cornerstones, and monuments.

When we began our studies on Ottoman mosques and tombs in the late seventies, documents and publications that could shed light on this subject were almost non-existent. While numerous books and articles had been published for approximately 150 years researching and introducing the hidden design methods of Christian religious architecture, no one had shown interest in this aspect of Ottoman architecture.

The work of the Russian scholar M.S. Bulatov, which explained the geometry in the designs of Central Asian Islamic architecture, came into our hands only near our retirement years, and the geometric solutions it contained seemed overly complex for that period (especially for the 9th century).

Nevertheless, we courageously continued our work and inevitably strayed down a series of erroneous paths. We introduced the work of those years in some of our articles. Very few of the criticisms reached a level that could point us in the right direction. However, we believe we have convincingly established this much:

Sinan and those before him must have incorporated certain numbers derived from Abjad numerals and the Basmala in their designs for religious architecture.

After retirement, due to a hip operation, we immigrated to Canada and then decided to stay there. As time passed, we realized that we had taken a very productive and auspicious step for our research.

Somehow, it occurred to us to apply to a Masonic Lodge because we had heard about their rich libraries. Permission was granted, and for weeks we immersed ourselves in books from the 19th and even 18th centuries in their libraries. Finally, one day, flashes of insight began to ignite in our minds. We were almost ready to shout "Eureka!" like Archimedes. We had solved the problem. We understood that "The key to the secret is the Pythagorean triangle."

The importance given to architecture and the Pythagorean triangle in Masonry was astounding. Pythagoras's "47th problem" was constantly referenced. The use of this triangle as an emblem in some lodges, and the inclusion of the compass and square in the Masonic emblem, all began to appear as signs emphasizing the importance of this triangle.

This book, which presents the early periods of the art of architecture in an understandable way for everyone, will fill an important gap as it is a reference book that can be utilized by architects and aspiring architects, as well as by art historians, archaeologists, and guides when introducing archaeological sites.

In the evaluation section at the end of the book, certain topics such as ancient civilizations, architecture, art, and beliefs are discussed with an unconventional approach, moving far beyond previous assessments of antiquity. Istanbul is one of the world's most exciting and culturally diverse cities and, like most great cities, it has architecture to match. Covering more than two millennia its buildings range from the lofty and many-tiered aqueducts built by the Romans to Ottoman mosques, with their attendant bath houses, schools and hospitals. In Beyoglu, across from the Golden Horn, banks, arcades, embassies and apartment complexes reflect foreign influences. Here disparate architectural styles such as Belle Epoque, Venetian, Gothic and Art Deco all live on in surprisingly happy harmony. Elsewhere along the Bosphorus visitors can see the Baroque palaces of the Sultans and charming yali - quintessentially Turkish waterside mansions, but looming in the background are the skyscrapers, bridges and other elements of a tech-smart metropolis. Planned to run for two years between 2008 and 2010, but extended until the book's publication in 2012, the studies involved interviews with many individuals; research in numerous archives and libraries in Ankara, Istanbul, and Berlin; and attempts to obtain as complete a list of his structures as possible and to create a mature catalog with on-site observations. The symposium held at MSGSÜ in January 2010 and the comprehensive exhibition opened on the same date were well-received as two important products of the Commemoration Program research project. Egli was invited to Turkey in 1926 to reorganize the architecture education program and design educational-instructional, i.e., school buildings, according to contemporary principles and methods, he found himself in the midst of the three fundamental development policies of the nascent Republic of Turkey. As the compulsory policies of the war years gave way to new orientations reinforced by the ideas of creating a strong national population and, relatedly, establishing a modern nation-state, it became imperative to implement reforms in health, law, and education, respectively. Education reform constituted the third link in these almost simultaneous priority steps, to enable the construction of a sustainable, healthy, modern society with high productive capacity. Unlike the German-speaking architects who came to Turkey as 'exiles' fleeing Europe's tense political climate, Egli was invited from Vienna by Clemens Holzmeister's suggestion.

He was appointed as the chief architect responsible for the design of schools where modern individuals of the Republic would be educated, within the Ministry of National Education, and undertook the tasks of "organizing and improving their programs, giving lectures, and teaching" at the Academy of Fine Arts. The National Architectural Seminar, aiming to document and publicize the civil architectural heritage, was initiated at the Academy in the early 1930s under Egli's leadership, with the assistance of his assistant Sedad Hakkı Eldem, and a unique body of knowledge was accumulated.

During his 14 years in Turkey, Egli designed significant buildings of Republican-era modern architecture, including the İsmet Pasha Girls' Institute, the Music Teachers' School, the Atatürk Forest Farm (AOÇ) Urban Design, Brewery, Civil Servant and Worker Housing, and Bathhouse, Ragıp Devres Villa, Fuat Bulca House, Etimesgut Model Village, Higher Agricultural Institute, School of Political Science, Istanbul University Biology Institute, Turkish Aeronautical Association Administrative Building and Flight School, and the Iraqi and Swiss Embassies. Today's structures and projects gain validity only through the development and building upon knowledge created and learned in the past, and architecture builds its own development on these roots. Against a conservative attachment to old structures, over the years, Medieval architecture gave way to Renaissance architecture, and then to many different architectural movements, and time has always created new architectural developments built upon one another using similar roots. In the continuation of this development process, modern architecture emerged almost more than a century ago, and new approaches based on computer usage have appeared since then and continue today. Thoughts and works created in the past, and those existing today, express an achievement, a development, only when evaluated within their own time frames. There are viewpoints and theories that time is not a measure, not a reality, but time is the only and most important measure that can change only within itself, not subject to personal control, and cannot be controlled. Although the power of thoughts and created architecture or a structure may be built upon very old roots, merely using knowledge from the past is not sufficient.
The power of every work can certainly be measured by its ability to endure within the measure of time and simultaneously not lose its value. It reached its peak with the consolidation of Ottoman rule in the second half of the 16th century, finding its unique expression in the "hayatlı ev" (house with a courtyard/living area). Although the Turkish house has been described in travelogues, engravings, and paintings for five hundred years, the limited lifespan of its building materials, especially wood, has not left sufficient data to study this architecture in all its details.

With this book, which attempts to evaluate Turkish wooden residential architecture with comprehensive historical research and a deep theoretical approach, we hope it will achieve the position and value it deserves in universal architectural history.

In Halil İnalcık's İstanbul Tarihi Araştırmaları (Studies on the History of Istanbul), one of the works he entrusted to our publishing house before his death, İnalcık's articles on Istanbul's history and previously unpublished works, through which he contributed to the subject for sixty years, are presented together. In the first section of the work, İnalcık compiles his various studies on the repopulation and reconstruction activities of Istanbul after its conquest. He examines the city's re-establishment as a Turkish-Islamic city, drawing upon archival documents and primary sources in various languages. Additionally, the city's population, settlements, and economic life are among the book's significant contributions. In the second section, İnalcık presents his research on Galata, Eyüp, and Üsküdar as the Bilâd-i Selâse (Three Cities). Alongside various Istanbul censuses, he dedicates a significant portion to the 1885 Istanbul Census, focusing on the structural characteristics of Istanbul's demographics. By providing a list of existing neighborhoods in Istanbul from 1911, he illustrates the developmental stages of Istanbul as a Turkish-Islamic city over a broad spectrum from 1453 to 1911. In İstanbul Tarihi Araştırmaları, İnalcık's research on the history of Istanbul over many years is presented as a whole, along with his work The Survey of Istanbul 1455, published in 2012, which was the first Ottoman cadastral survey of Istanbul after its conquest.

As a result of its long reign, the Ottoman Empire adorned the lands we live in and the surrounding geography with its architectural works. The differences between the ideal or idealized and the actual operation undoubtedly generated tension, conflict, and dynamism. From this perspective, even if the idealized working scheme for the Hassa Architects' Guild (Hâssa Mimarlar Ocağı) is accepted as correct, it was not effective in the late 18th century, the historical period chosen by the book for its examination of the subject. Undoubtedly, if one sets aside the historical narrative shaped by the organization's status-dependent order, the chief architect-apprentice relations, and the degree of the chief architect's control and influence over every architectural activity in the empire, which is idealized and presented as if everything was in order, the question "How was architectural organization shaped in the classical period of the Ottoman Empire?" has not yet been addressed. For this reason, attempts to answer the question "What kind of result would emerge if architectural organization in the late Ottoman period were examined?" find their place in the book with a perspective beyond idealized schemes. In the first section of the book, based on available information, the aim was to examine the transformations in construction organization from the late 18th century onwards by making comparisons with practices from the classical period. The organization in the provinces between the second half of the 18th century and the Tanzimat period, the regulation of architectural revenues and construction organization after the Tanzimat, and the gaps created by the system in Ottoman construction organization are discussed. In the book, events related to the construction environment are specialized and explained under subheadings with examples that reinforce the subject. The aim was to develop different topics, examples, and discourses from the sources written and published on this subject to date, and to write what has not been said or written, thus doing what has not been done before. The book discusses the construction environment and architectural activities from approximately 200 years ago.

Modern Architecture - Kahn Lectures 1930

Modern Architecture is Frank Lloyd Wright's first book outlining the principles of Organic Architecture.
