Today, the country with the most intense focus on this objective is India, with architects such as Charles Correa, Balkrishna Doshi, Romi Khosla, Anand Raje, and Ranjit Sabikhi being the Indians who dedicate their thought and talent to this endeavor. While numerous books and articles had been published for approximately 150 years researching and introducing the hidden design methods of Christian religious architecture, no one had shown interest in this aspect of Ottoman architecture.

The work of the Russian scholar M.S. Bulatov, which explained the geometry in the designs of Central Asian Islamic architecture, came into our hands only near our retirement years, and the geometric solutions it contained seemed overly complex for that period (especially for the 9th century).

Nevertheless, we courageously continued our work and inevitably strayed down a series of erroneous paths. We introduced the work of those years in some of our articles. Very few of the criticisms reached a level that could point us in the right direction. However, we believe we have convincingly established this much:

Sinan and those before him must have incorporated certain numbers derived from Abjad numerals and the Basmala in their designs for religious architecture.

After retirement, due to a hip operation, we immigrated to Canada and then decided to stay there. As time passed, we realized that we had taken a very productive and auspicious step for our research.

Somehow, it occurred to us to apply to a Masonic Lodge because we had heard about their rich libraries. Permission was granted, and for weeks we immersed ourselves in books from the 19th and even 18th centuries in their libraries. Finally, one day, flashes of insight began to ignite in our minds. We were almost ready to shout "Eureka!" like Archimedes. We had solved the problem. We understood that "The key to the secret is the Pythagorean triangle."

The importance given to architecture and the Pythagorean triangle in Masonry was astounding. Planned to run for two years between 2008 and 2010, but extended until the book's publication in 2012, the studies involved interviews with many individuals; research in numerous archives and libraries in Ankara, Istanbul, and Berlin; and attempts to obtain as complete a list of his structures as possible and to create a mature catalog with on-site observations. The symposium held at MSGSÜ in January 2010 and the comprehensive exhibition opened on the same date were well-received as two important products of the Commemoration Program research project. This book, which calls for a closer understanding and learning of Seyfi Arkan's designs, the story of how his buildings were acquired, the values in these buildings, but also the personality behind all these stories, is bound to provoke and encourage new architectural research and interpretations, given his unique pioneering role in the modernization of Turkish architecture in the 20th century.

With this book, light is shed for the first time on the fact that Seyfi Arkan was indeed the most effective architect in Turkey's modernist expansion, how he directly transformed his era within practice, and his growing importance when viewed from today. About the Book The largest award given within the scope of the National Architecture Exhibition and Awards organized by the Chamber of Architects in memory of Mimar Sinan is the "Mimar Sinan Grand Prize," awarded to an architect or collaborating architects for their lifetime achievements and services to architecture. In 2008, the Chamber of Architects began organizing the Sinan Awarded Architects Program to compile and present the works of valuable architects who received the Sinan Award to the architectural community. The program includes a panel evaluating the architect's activity and productions, an exhibition of their works, and the publication of a book covering all of it. The Sinan Awarded Architects Program for the 2012-2014 period was organized for Erkut Şahinbaş, the recipient of the Mimar Sinan Grand Prize. The Selection Committee brought Şahinbaş to the forefront with these words: "Mr. Erkut Şahinbaş has been awarded the Mimar Sinan Grand Prize for his multi-dimensional contributions to the architectural environment through his architectural practices, his educator identity, and his contributions to non-governmental organizations, for successfully representing Turkish architecture in international settings and in projects realized in different geographies, for serving as an example to subsequent generations with his humble personality and meticulous understanding of quality, and for sharing his practices and thoughts with the architectural community through exhibitions and publications." In addition to the panel we held in Ankara on April 12, 2013, as the Chamber of Architects, the exhibition titled "Adventure with Light: The Architecture of Erkut Şahinbaş" met its audience between April 12 and April 30, 2013; the exhibition continues to open in various cities in Turkey within a determined program. The book includes the evaluations and inter-discussions made by Esin Boyacıoğlu, Ali Cengizkan, Jale Nejdet Erzen, Abdi Güzer, İlhan Kural, and Ziya Tanalı on Şahinbaş and his architecture during the panel. Additionally, there is an article by Kemal Aran, who describes Şahinbaş's Doğramacızade Ali Paşa Mosque as an "iconoclastic" application and examines it from the perspective of mimesis theory. The buildings and projects brought together in the exhibition, where light is a constitutive element, form one of the interfaces of the book. Erkut Şahinbaş, one of the first architects to bring his lifetime productions together in a book as a visionary architect, published his book in 1998. The other interface of the book is an update of Şahinbaş's buildings and projects from 1998 to 2014.

Zeki Sayar (1905-2001) is one of the most recognized architects among the legendary 1928 graduating class of the Academy, and thus among the architects of the early Republican period, after Sedad Hakkı Eldem, and one of the rare architects who managed to remain active in the architectural environment for a remarkably long time. They were actively engaged in architectural practice during a period when the traditionalist architectural approach, which had gained momentum within the framework of the Second National Architecture movement in the 1940s, was waning. In the 1950s and 60s, within the socio-economic and political context of the time, they were pioneering figures of an approach that turned towards international contemporary architecture and regenerated rationalist perspectives. They are two important names who not only participated in this transformation in architecture but also triggered it, succeeding without promoting themselves as figures through various means such as architectural media, schools, or organizations. In their 26-year professional partnership from 1952 to 1978, they produced high-quality works, if not quantitative, including approximately 20 buildings, 5 urban planning projects, and 21 competition projects entered either together or with different teams. Their most significant work in architectural literature is the Lawyers' Site (Hukukçular Sitesi) in Mecidiyeköy, Istanbul, where they introduced a unique and experimental approach to high-rise residential design. Other quality works such as the Vakko Factory, Hami Çon Villa, Jak Kamhi Apartment, Birkan Apartments, Pegasus House, and the Moda Mass Housing and Tourism Facilities project, which are important from various perspectives in the context of their time, are relatively less known.

During the 2012-2014 period of the Chamber of Architects Commemoration Programs, Haluk Baysal and Melih Birsel were brought to the forefront, and a comprehensive update was made. Egli's Contributions to Turkey

When Ernst A. Egli was invited to Turkey in 1926 to reorganize the architecture education program and design educational-instructional, i.e., school buildings, according to contemporary principles and methods, he found himself in the midst of the three fundamental development policies of the nascent Republic of Turkey. As the compulsory policies of the war years gave way to new orientations reinforced by the ideas of creating a strong national population and, relatedly, establishing a modern nation-state, it became imperative to implement reforms in health, law, and education, respectively. Education reform constituted the third link in these almost simultaneous priority steps, to enable the construction of a sustainable, healthy, modern society with high productive capacity. Unlike the German-speaking architects who came to Turkey as 'exiles' fleeing Europe's tense political climate, Egli was invited from Vienna by Clemens Holzmeister's suggestion.

He was appointed as the chief architect responsible for the design of schools where modern individuals of the Republic would be educated, within the Ministry of National Education, and undertook the tasks of "organizing and improving their programs, giving lectures, and teaching" at the Academy of Fine Arts. Egli's innovations at the Academy, such as student admission through an entrance exam, extending the duration of education to five years, and curriculum changes, shaped architectural education in Turkey. The National Architectural Seminar, aiming to document and publicize the civil architectural heritage, was initiated at the Academy in the early 1930s under Egli's leadership, with the assistance of his assistant Sedad Hakkı Eldem, and a unique body of knowledge was accumulated.

During his 14 years in Turkey, Egli designed significant buildings of Republican-era modern architecture, including the İsmet Pasha Girls' Institute, the Music Teachers' School, the Atatürk Forest Farm (AOÇ) Urban Design, Brewery, Civil Servant and Worker Housing, and Bathhouse, Ragıp Devres Villa, Fuat Bulca House, Etimesgut Model Village, Higher Agricultural Institute, School of Political Science, Istanbul University Biology Institute, Turkish Aeronautical Association Administrative Building and Flight School, and the Iraqi and Swiss Embassies. He also signed urban development plans for cities and towns, including districts of Niğde, Edirne, Balıkesir, Samsun, and Denizli.
After Atatürk's death in 1938, he lost his protector and left Turkey in 1940 due to the changing political climate. In 1953, he returned to Turkey on a United Nations assignment, giving lectures at the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University and the Institute of Public Administration for Turkey and the Middle East established within the faculty. This path was shaped by starting his design work in Side and encountering the two-thousand-year history of the Mediterranean, which in a sense has become a timeless accumulation. In later years of his profession, he would experience the process of enriching the intellectual infrastructure of this conceptual model. In this context, Gürsel's designs always revolve around the concepts of "time and timelessness" and "history and space" around the place and time; he re-searches them, re-tests them, creates images, deconstructs them, re-creates them, and generates symbols. He questions time, seeks timelessness, connects times, and perhaps, withdraws. This model of seeing and thinking, which began in his early works, exemplifies the difficult line of reviving past settlement patterns in his memory and designing spontaneity without falling into affectation. What is truly important is the existence of a structure that, almost as if it doesn't want to declare itself designed, appears spontaneous. His subsequent designs are works that elevated Gürsel's architectural concept to a higher level of consciousness. His habit of pursuing environmental data transforms into a collaboration, an increasingly passionate attention, turning the clock tower in the square, the old and ruined chapel, the five cypresses of the cemetery, the centuries-old monumental pine tree, or the ancient lighthouse into immortal images, while creating a chess game between "what exists" and "what is new," and evokes the dreams and meticulousness of a designer who never forgets, "like olives, dreamy pomegranate trees, small rural gods."

- Afife Batur

For my part, I am one of those who prefer the Chamber's political role to be on a professional platform. This is because historical environment preservation efforts developed by ignoring the social structure—as in the example of Safranbolu—need to integrate with their users. Niepce, who captured the first photographic image, was compelled to photograph the group of buildings visible from his home's balcony. This was because the first light-sensitive surface he created was a film too slow to detect moving objects. In the same period, other photographers who followed in his footsteps also preferred to photograph static objects like architecture due to the low sensitivity of early film. Although portrait photography became more widespread with the production of faster films in later years, architectural photography never took a back seat. The development of architectural education and the emergence of the architectural profession during the same period also facilitated the progress of architectural photography. As with any research, certain findings have been presented at the end of this inquiry. However, it is not possible to insist on their absolute accuracy. Here, to the best of our ability, an attempt has been made to capture the content of the final stage of an ancient accumulated knowledge that took shape with its Islamic layer. In doing so, while providing details from pre-Islamic examples, we primarily strived to present the meaning and symbolic dimension by considering the scientific and cultural factors that constitute the Islamic segment.

With this research, we have attempted to reveal the philosophical, psychological, religious, and scientific data pertaining to architecture, one of the most significant components of Islamic art. We embarked on the path of creating a repertoire of meaning by combining the unseen aspects behind Islamic architecture, or Islamic art in general, with the visible ones. In its general appearance, Islamic architecture has not refrained from incorporating the accumulated knowledge of ancient cultures and has expanded its repertoire by adding its own accumulated knowledge to these. In this case, Islamic architecture has presented its structure by drawing from ancient culture, while its ornamentation or aesthetics remained within the sphere of Islam.

(From the Promotional Bulletin)

Are you ready to meet the world's first "star architect"?
If so, get ready to discover Mimar Sinan through dozens of illustrations and photographs!

Mimar Sinan is a great architect recognized worldwide for his extraordinary genius.
