Her aim was to increase the moments of happiness that she encountered by chance in life. Years later, when she decided to revise this diary, it resulted in A Life of One's Own: the product of someone who had made considerable progress in discovering her inner world, and her desire to share the surprising things she had learned with others.

Perhaps the book focuses most on the difference between viewing life from the narrow lens of the mind and viewing it from the broader lens of the whole self. Milner states that the former brings with it a strong sense of lack and dissatisfaction, while the latter brings a distinct feeling of contentment and wholeness, for although the mind is a fundamental element, a human being is a much more complex entity with emotions, desires, and needs that fall outside the mind's dominance. So much so that when we pause and turn our gaze inward, we realize how little we actually know about ourselves, and how many aspects of ourselves we suppress or ignore. This book reminds us of precisely this and emphasizes how important it is for a fulfilling life to connect with our self as a whole.

About the Author:

British author and psychoanalyst. Born in London in 1900. Graduated from the psychology department of University College London in 1924. The diary she began keeping at the age of 26 was published in 1934 under the title A Life of One's Own (under the pseudonym Joanna Field) and received positive reviews from literary circles. During this period, Milner was influenced by the works of Jean Piaget and Jungian analytical psychologists, and also developed an interest in Eastern philosophies such as Taoism. After three years of psychoanalytic training, she began working as a psychoanalyst in 1943. An amateur painter who frequently used drawings in her psychotherapy sessions, Milner passed away in 1998 after a long and productive life. Other books by the author include: An Experiment in Leisure (1937), The Human Problem in Schools (1938), On Not Being Able to Paint (1950), The Hands of the Living God (1969).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/3950/7395/files/ef2fce9cc7764abb86788608cac6d982-front-1686564920.jpg?v=1740470982
yasak-olmayan-hazlar
Permissible Pleasures

Psychologists and psychoanalysts often speak of forbidden pleasures, through which they try to explore the human psyche. Since prohibitions often fuel desire, forbidden pleasures always come to the forefront, always desired more. But what about non-forbidden pleasures? Do we appreciate their value, or does their value diminish in our eyes precisely because they are not forbidden?

“This book explores whether non-forbidden pleasures have more to tell us about pleasure than forbidden ones,” says Adam Phillips. “If this were true, so many things we take too seriously would lose their gravity. The despotism of the forbidden comes not from its prohibiting things, but from its telling us what we want to do—we want to do the forbidden. But the non-forbidden never gives orders.”

Phillips addresses burning issues such as obedience, self-criticism, and whether life is worth living, all within the context of forbidden and non-forbidden pleasures. He encourages us to think not only about the forbidden pleasure of disobedience but also about the non-forbidden pleasure of obedience. He points out that self-criticism often means unjustly condemning oneself, yet merciless self-criticism itself can be a pleasure—a non-forbidden pleasure. And he asks us all: “Is life unbearable, or have we been forbidden to enjoy it? And if life is also a forbidden pleasure, who forbade it and why?”

Schizophrenia: An Unfinished History is a comprehensive study by renowned psychiatry historian and psychoanalyst Orna Ophir, examining the phenomenon of schizophrenia through scientific, cultural, and social contexts throughout history.
