NURİ M. KALKAY?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Nuri M. Kalkay was born in 1934 in the village of Budak, Hınıs district of Erzurum, as the fifth child of a crowded family of Caucasian origin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWith the help of his uncle, who was then a criminal judge, he completed his pre-medical education in various provinces and districts of Anatolia, and then graduated with high honors from Istanbul University Çapa Medical Faculty in 1959, which he entered in 1953. After completing his specialization training at the same university's Çapa 3rd Internal Medicine Clinic, he went to the United States in 1966. There, he renewed his postgraduate education at SUNY Downstate Medical School and N.J. College of Medicine, becoming a gastroenterologist. His aim was to return to his homeland and work as an academician. However, due to family and economic reasons, he had to stay in America and work as a private physician.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Kalkay wavered between two conflicting ideas for a long time. On the one hand, he loved teaching and being with students, while on the other hand, he loved being with patients, helping them, applying the theoretical knowledge he learned to patients, and learning real medical knowledge from patients even more. Finally, when he learned that general practitioners earned much more money than full-time doctors, he decided to work as a private general practitioner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Kalkay continued his medical career from 1972 onwards in New Jersey, USA, as both a private physician and a consultant gastroenterologist. He believed that knowledge gained without critical thinking, simply by reading books or attending monologic conferences, never truly becomes one's own and serves no purpose other than rote memorization. According to him, real knowledge, which causes anatomical changes in the human brain and is obtained only through long-term mental and physical efforts, becomes people's own and affects their thoughts and behaviors, leading them to something better. This knowledge can only be obtained through teaching that develops by actively participating in teaching systems with critical thinking and questions, creating a dialogue, and more importantly, by personally doing and experiencing what is desired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt is in the light of this knowledge and the experiences he gained during 40 years of medical practice that Dr. Kalkay wanted to share his personal studies, which he undertook to better understand his own aging, with you, the readers, by compiling them in this book titled \"Thoughts on Thinking.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDr. Kalkay retired in 2008 due to his chronological age. However, despite being retired in age, he could not retire mentally. For this reason, he continued to work part-time in both America and Turkey.
