The rise of the digital medium and the pervasive influence of electronically transmitted images in every field make this question far more urgent and relevant today than when the book was first published.
According to Juhani Pallasmaa, the suppression of the other four sensory domains leads to the neglect of the multisensory character of human spatial experience, thereby both crippling humanity and weakening architecture's ability to inspire, engage, and celebrate the value of life in all its aspects; this is also the fundamental reason for the general impoverishment of our built environment.
In this revised and expanded edition, prepared based on the 4th English Edition of The Eyes of the Skin, a masterpiece that offers transformative insights and understandings and should be read by all architecture students as well as general readers, the reader will find:
•    The author's latest views on the importance of place, unfocused perception, and existential experience;
•  Updates and elucidations emphasizing that the most important and influential sense in architecture is our sense of self in the world;
•    An updated Introduction addressing the groundbreaking nature of understanding the importance of existential sense today;
• And Peter MacKeith's comprehensive essay, "A Door Handle, A Handshake," which serves as an introduction to Pallasmaa's thoughts on architecture and the nature of sensory experience, and an insider's testimony.
For a student reading it for the first time, The Eyes of the Skin is a moment of enlightenment. Land management at the country, city, and rural scales is necessary to best use, manage, and preserve the world's land for the benefit of all its inhabitants. For land management, information and breakdowns related to property use must be available, and these must be carefully examined and analyzed before decisions regarding property are made.

Nihat Enver Ülger states the following in the updated and enhanced 3rd edition of the book:
“Land management is, in essence, the management of nature. Since humans first existed, they have used and changed the nature they live in and are a part of. Today, problems such as climate change, environmental pollution, food degradation, migrations, epidemics, species extinction, and ecosystem disruption arise from the mismanagement of land-nature. Unless humanity internalizes living in harmony with nature, these problems will deepen further. The pandemic process and the major earthquake we experienced on February 6th are the closest and most striking examples of this.

'Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.' We know that Sir Isaac Newton said this for the Laws of Force and Motion, but it doesn't just explain a physical rule; it also explains the law of nature. Interactions in nature are based on similar rules. The destruction humanity inflicts on nature will generate an equal and opposite reaction; it will return to humanity in the same proportion. The important thing is to know how to manage this cycle.

Learning to live in harmony with nature, without alienating it, by understanding it… That is the real issue. The point we have reached is the importance of managing and using land-nature, that is, creating policies and strategies on how humanity will use nature for its needs. To create this and to best use, manage, and sustain the world's land for the benefit of all its inhabitants, there is a need for 'Land Management' throughout the country. Managing a city, a country; knowing the quantity and quality of its land-related assets is also the foundation of being a transparent and democratic society. The indicator of countries' independence and happiness is the protection of these assets and riches and their fair sharing with all elements of society; this is the most urgent need. Detail evokes a sense of order in people. This feeling arises from the hierarchy and communication between materials. Detail, to take shape, sometimes draws inspiration from construction requirements and sometimes from material properties. Above all, detail enhances the performance of the element used; it extends its durability. For designers, detail is the blending of aesthetic concerns with function. For example, a table detail in a dining room cannot be considered separately from the sideboard that appears as an extension of the fireplace and wall. Every piece of furniture and interior architectural element must speak the same language, supporting each other's roles to convey a message.

In addition to detail, the designer must also design the spatial organization. Because detail and space are design processes that reveal the purpose of use and proceed in coordination. Every space needs an ancillary space. This is a pantry and a terraced barbecue for the kitchen, and a dressing room and en-suite bathroom for the bedroom. Louis I. Kahn, one of the last representatives of modern architecture, described this idea as "servant space" and "served space."

In the service it provides, the designer presents spatial and furniture products for use under comfort criteria to the client. The main interior architectural comfort criteria are air quality, natural light adequacy, thermal balance, and ergonomics. To meet all these criteria, the designer must choose the longest-lasting and least harmful material. Many chemicals are used to protect materials. However, there are also products that make materials long-lasting through natural methods. But natural products are not as effective as chemicals. The interior architect's task will be to establish this balance correctly.

In this book, many points are specified regarding what elements the designer should pay attention to during the material selection process. For example, the decisions made about the material to be used when designing a door and the detail requirements are explained carefully. Furthermore, the necessity of designing the elements used in interior architecture in harmony with each other is also stated. The junctions of baseboards and door frames are among the most important detail solutions in space designs.

The book covers all the design parameters necessary for designers. For example, the necessary equipment for designing furniture includes knowledge of ergonomics, materials, construction, textiles, surface treatments, and color. In addition to all these, the history of furniture has also been incorporated into the topics. The book makes no claim other than to 'inspire' new enthusiasms through the sharing of past enthusiasms experienced in the architectural education environment. Le Corbusier realized and experienced this almost 100 years ago in the design of the cabin he built for himself, called Le Cabanon. Le Cabanon is, in fact, the embodiment of Modulor, the scaling system he developed. Thanks to this system, which emerged from the measurements of the human body and grew by addition, the 'human-furniture-space' trio could be expressed numerically for the first time. Christopher Alexander, who laid the foundations of parametric design, a breakthrough in architecture today, followed the path opened by Modulor. The methods in the book show various ways to solve a design problem; none of these ways claim to be definitive. Design is not simply a set of operations or the reproduction of existing models. It is an always creative process that generates new wholes as conditions change and draws on different sources of inspiration. The elements we have addressed separately in the book (context, function, design, material, and structure) to show you how to arrive at the first design idea interact closely throughout the design process, forming a complex system of relationships and conditions. Which of these elements leads to the birth of the first design idea? Which approach matures the design? The answer to these questions lies in individual experience and understanding. Architectural design courses provide a unique ground for gaining these. However, design is not something you can learn by reading books or listening to lectures; these only serve as a driving force or catalyst in the individual development of students. You can only learn design by doing it, by experiencing it in practice. I hope that the book 'Design Ideas' will stimulate impulses that will help you develop your own creative designs and encourage you to live a life dedicated to design. Understanding the load-bearing system – its structural principles and the unique characteristics of each system – is crucial for applying these principles precisely during the design process and for developing a solution appropriate to the materials used and construction method. Especially at the initial stages of education, where many new pieces of information need to be assimilated, it is often difficult for a student to navigate the complexity of statics and load-bearing theory. ‘Step by Step Structural Systems’ bridges the disciplines of architecture and civil engineering and explains the fundamentals of load-bearing theory in a simple, understandable, and chronological manner. For a general comprehension of the subject, the author first explains the loads and forces acting on a structure through examples and simple explanations. He introduces typical structural elements and shows the load-bearing systems that designers can use when designing different types of structures. The concise information provided here enables students to work with load-bearing systems with a holistic understanding and to create innovative designs...”

Alfred Meistermann, the author of the book, states:

“...‘Step by Step Structural Systems’ aims to provide a simple approach to the theory of load-bearing systems, which may seem complex at first glance. The information presented here should enable students to understand structural contexts, consider the requirements arising from loads and supports during design, and thus realize their designs with a realistic and holistic understanding. Designing load-bearing systems develops designers' spatial ideas. The possibilities offered by load-bearing systems allow them to be more creative. Therefore, the success of a load-bearing system is primarily related to the extent to which it reflects the overall design idea and how it contributes to the formation of this idea. This becomes even more important in design processes where load-bearing systems are decisive in every respect (for example, in large-span building systems). In such cases, addressing the designed load-bearing system in all its complexity greatly simplifies the solution of problems...”

“In Pursuit of the Tree: A Dictionary of Forest Products in Design,” which conveys the journey of wood, a significant element in architecture, through design processes from past to present, has been published in collaboration with Yıldız Entegre and YEM Yayın.

Prepared by Genco Berkin, A Dictionary of Forest Products in Design is a valuable resource for academics and students in forestry-related departments, as well as for architects, interior designers, and industrial product designers. The Ottomans produced great works which, I believe, hold a special place in world architectural history; these have survived to this day and have influenced leading art historians and architects worldwide. I am a historian of this subject. I have been working in this field for over 60 years. As a master of this craft, I felt the need to explain architecture in a more detailed way, intertwined with Ottoman history and culture, with a different understanding than what has been done so far.

I prepared 'Ottoman Architecture' by bringing together ideas, studies, research, and comparisons from other works, which I compiled over many long years. In fact, I can say that I summarized in a single work a task that is encyclopedic in nature and could be done by many people. I say 'summarized' because it is not possible to fit all of Ottoman architecture into 720 pages. However, such works are not read encyclopedically. In my opinion, books prepared with an internally consistent approach are more illuminating because they have internal consistency. I tried to achieve this in a field where I spent 60 years, and I succeeded. That is why I am happy.

"Architectural history" can merely be the story of grand, rich, and beautiful buildings. It can also be the story of personal and societal demands related to a building, but this parameter has often not been given sufficient weight. Yet, structures do not materialize until these demands are transformed into a building program. Behind these demands and programs lie social functions, social values, personal tastes, manners, knowledge, and techniques. For example, the fact that the staircase, one of the most magnificent elements of architectural history, was not used as an important design element in Ottoman architecture before the 19th century, and that designs such as the Scala Reggia or the staircase hall of Würzburg Palace never developed in Turkey, is an architectural history problem that deserves contemplation. Similarly, seeking answers to questions about dimensions, symmetry, and ornamentation; examining the content of the desires and aspirations behind the wills that created houses, palaces, and mosques; is more important than merely displaying buildings as a cultural showcase. The fact that Sinan continued his research until he reached the Selimiye; the fact that Nuruosmaniye, built 20 years after the Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa Mosque, could be designed and implemented with such a bold interpretation at that time, are as important as the buildings themselves. Because it is these interpretations and tastes that make them unique and appealing. Understanding and explaining how much of these are tradition, how much thought, how much patron's command and taste, and how much the expression of the artist's will, are the efforts that make architectural history worth writing and reading. If written with a sufficiently developed intuition, this effort can better explain the true nature of historical production. I believe that architectural history can only have meaning if written this way, otherwise, it cannot go beyond a display of goods.

Readers of this work may reject the naming of structures they previously knew as mosques as zawiye or imaret here. They say, 'Half the battle of finishing a job is starting it.'
I realized that many of my students participating in interior architecture project courses lacked sufficient knowledge about furniture design, preventing them from having the courage to imagine new furniture, and thus experiencing difficulty in starting their designs. In fact, what will make that initial start is the very inspiration that will come to them. Inspiration emerges after a person gains knowledge, is nourished by environmental factors, and internalizes them. Therefore, narratives enriched with cases and examples formed the main structure of this book. For this reason, I tried to present the mentors and cultural backgrounds that influenced many designers' inspirations within their development processes. On the other hand, since the design process is enriched by the accumulation of a visual repertoire, I prepared a selection supported by material selection criteria and details to create awareness in this regard, touching upon 10 different types of furniture designs by 40 pioneering designers.

In furniture design, detailing begins primarily with determining the material; then comes the shaping of the material (e.g., obtaining profiles + bending processes), and finally, it is completed by joining with the same or different materials (e.g., stitching, welding, or riveting). Looking at the recent past of furniture, we see that pioneering designers used innovative production techniques to highlight the material to add a different characteristic to the product. Thus, designs acquire the quality, as Otto Wagner said, of 'reflecting their era.'

This book examines the masterpieces of 40 famous furniture designers and architects. Similar to the previous (third) book in the series, "Structural Systems," which aimed to build a bridge between the disciplines of architecture and civil engineering, this book focuses on building materials that appear in almost every stage of the architectural design process and are used to bring design ideas to life. Based on the understanding that building materials not only form the foundation of construction activity but also facilitate communication between people and buildings, the book emphasizes aspects of materials that directly concern both their design and the appearance of the structure to be built. The wide range of possibilities that different types of materials can offer to design when used consciously forms the focus of the book. It is stressed that each material only gains meaning within its specific context, and therefore, materials are open to interpretation and re-contextualization. To explore the physical and sensory world of materials, the fundamental properties of building materials are first defined, then major material types are examined under separate headings, addressing their distinguishing characteristics. The processes of selecting, developing, and detailing materials play an important role in the design process. Integrating design and material to achieve a coherent structure is the ultimate goal. A material is primarily defined by its properties perceived by the sense of sight (color, surface texture, reflective properties, joints, etc.). These properties are integrated with properties perceived by other senses (feel to the touch, smell, sound, surface temperature, etc.). The structural properties of materials (physical structure, load-bearing capacity, durability, etc.) and their environmental effects are often not perceptible to the naked eye. However, these 'intrinsic values', which can only be determined by measurement, define the technical applicability and suitability of the material for its intended purpose. Ultimately, each material gains meaning within its context. Although this meaning may be based on common values, it lacks objective foundations. Therefore, it prioritizes actual structures through photographs and notes, while dissecting architecture down to its fundamental ideas and components.

Owen Hopkins summarizes the content of the book, which consists of four sections with numerous cross-references, as follows:

“The first section; as indicated in the introduction, focuses on ten building types that have recurred in various forms throughout architectural history. Although examples of each type vary according to time and place, they embody certain characteristics that are integral to that type. Other building groupings in this section were made according to forms or morphologies that are considered to have withstood time and influenced many building types. Thus, this section is intended to be a 'first point of reference' for the reader, where they can turn when encountering a public building, for example, and find the closest example with similar architectural features.

The second section; Structural Systems; is based on the thesis that all architectural languages are somehow derived from the most fundamental articulation of a building’s structural system. Similarly, it goes beyond specific architectural styles by focusing on various main structural elements – columns and piers, arches, modern concrete and steel structures – that appear in different forms in various architectural languages as key components. Like the first section, this section serves as a 'guide' for other sections, but at the same time, it forms a complete reference in itself by providing the specific elements in minute detail.

The third section; deals with architectural elements – the main components present in all buildings, regardless of style, scale, or form. These include walls and surfaces, windows and doors, roofs, stairs, and elevators.

The fourth section; consists of a standard glossary of terms that reference other sections where each term is exemplified. The glossary only includes elements mentioned in the first three sections, and like the book itself, it is comprehensive but not encyclopedic. By focusing on visible elements and components, the book does not include components of the building structure that often remain invisible. Some extremely archaic terms were also excluded for reasons of space and clarity. Although architecture became globalized in the second half of the 20th century, it is important to note that the book focuses on the Western architectural tradition; some very recent examples are chosen from outside Europe and its sphere of influence. Readers interested in non-Western structures should consult more specialized works.

Christopher Wren, the great architect of London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, said, 'Architecture aims for eternity.' This observation comes to life in St. Paul’s Cathedral, which continues to exist as a symbol of the city and the nation. While few buildings are built with such grand aims and splendor as St. Paul’s, structures in a place and situation – from the most humble vernacular buildings to the most elaborate ones at the top – rise as indicators of how their builders see themselves. Therefore, the ability to read a building – whether by looking at its image or at the building itself – and to decipher its meaning is essential for understanding how society and the world around us are formed; and this is what this book seeks to facilitate.”

The book Stainless Steel and Glass in Interior Architecture, prepared by Genco Berkin and Gökhan Mermi primarily for students of interior architecture, architecture, and industrial product design, as well as for designers and practitioners new to the profession, has been published by YEM Yayın.

To achieve successful results in interior design, it is necessary to thoroughly understand the materials to be used. Otto Wagner's book, whose translator is Hüseyin Tüzün and editor is Aykut Köksal, was described by an architectural historian as "the last great architect of the 19th century and the first great architect of the 20th century." In line with Wagner's desire expressed in his preface to the second edition, the book includes photographs of all the master architect's works. The photographs flow in parallel with the text, accompanying Wagner's words.

Aykut Köksal, the general editor of Arketon publications, states in his introduction: "Otto Wagner is among the architects in architectural history whose work shows a clear process of transformation. Wagner's early works are among the examples of 19th-century eclecticism, extending to Orientalism. This period is followed by works in the Secession style, the Austrian version of the Art Nouveau movement. This early modernist movement carries a decisive weight in Wagner's output. However, the master architect would not linger too long at this interim stop, quickly moving towards Modernism. In this context, the lectures he gave in 1895 constitute a turning point. Modern Architecture, published in 1896, becomes the first written product of this transformation. Modern Architecture is a paradigm-setting text; it can almost be described as a manifesto. Wagner utterly condemns the historicist tendencies of the 19th century and lays out the fundamental principles of Modernism. After Modern Architecture was published, proponents of historicism launched a barrage of criticism. Consequently, Wagner announced his definitive entry into the Secession and completely severed his ties with circles representing a certain period in Vienna.

To understand this transformation of Wagner, extending from thought to production, it would be interesting to take a closer look at Vienna of those years and observe the changes seen in different disciplines. In the early 20th century, in Vienna, from architecture to music, from plastic arts to philosophy, actors who heralded a new era and became decisive in the new century with their ideas and productions came to the fore. When the productions of these individuals are read alongside Otto Wagner's work, a surprising synchronicity will be observed.

Finally, it should be noted that Modern Architecture is one of the fundamental texts of architectural literature, deeply influencing later texts, and one of the best-known examples of this is Bruno Taut's Architecture in the New Age."

Theaters are special venues in terms of architectural design, both in terms of stage arrangement and audience platform, and in terms of acoustic and visual requirements.
