Traditional master builders constructed these dwellings by identifying the characteristics of the environment in which they would build the structure, the qualities of materials that could be sourced locally, and the needs of the family that would use the dwelling. Thus, on the one hand, settlements were built with solutions specific to the local conditions, and on the other hand, construction techniques learned from tradition were passed down from generation to generation through master builders. Many studies exist on the architectural and technical features of traditional dwellings across Turkey, including interregional differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHowever, studies on the technical knowledge that is part of the construction process of these buildings, developed over many years, learned through practice\/construction within tradition, and transmitted by master builders, are extremely limited. Our aim with this research is to document the knowledge, skills, and behaviors of traditional master builders who learned the construction techniques of historical dwellings, which are part of the Ottoman housing tradition and located in Ankara and its nearby settlements, by observing old masters and applied this knowledge throughout their lives or for a period of their lives, and to define this knowledge together with local construction techniques. For this purpose, an attempt was first made to reach old master builders who continued this tradition in settlements around Ankara that preserved their traditional characteristics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn the first chapter of the study, which consists of five main sections, the \"Ankara dwelling\" and its characteristics were defined, starting from the features of Ottoman dwellings, in order to convey the context of knowledge regarding traditional dwellings and master builders in and around Ankara; based on research in the literature, what is known about master builders who produced dwellings from the Ottoman period to the present day was conveyed within a historical perspective.
