At the end of the Opium War of 1839-42, which resulted in China's defeat, China was opened up to uncontrolled opium trade and also ceded the island, where the Hong Kong harbor is located today, to Great Britain, with the condition of its eventual return. Until the end of World War II, the city did not experience very rapid growth. The real breakthrough began with the great commercial-industrial change known as the East Asian miracle. This transformation would turn the city into an intermediary point between Western capital markets and East Asian centers. The integration of China into the capitalist system led to Hong Kong gaining even greater importance. The city's return to China in 2000 would not harm this position. The change that filled Hong Kong with large office buildings and bank headquarters emerged in this economic context. Nevertheless, it should be noted that contemporary Hong Kong is characterized not by significant architectural production on a global scale, but by its function as a commercial hub. Buildings like Foster's Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank are exceptions here. The city exhibits the character of a financial paradise defined by an immense agglomeration of office structures and apartments. Contemporary Hong Kong architecture, however, can be striking; it may hold clues waiting to be considered in the context of the future; it can even be considered a true global city candidate. But, the most accurate statement that can be made regarding its architectural/urban environment is that Hong Kong is a living dystopia.<strike></strike>
