Therefore, urban design is not dominated by a single discipline; rather, it aims to foster discussions on urban design in Turkey through shared contributions, examine application examples, and establish fundamental principles for a critical approach. Although there are various reasons for the loss of quality in Turkish cities today, the generalizing, uniforming, and quantitative approach to zoning, especially in recent times, has been influential. However, urban design emerged as a discipline from the 1950s onwards to prevent this loss of quality. At a conference held in 1956, urban design was defined by three main characteristics. The first is that urban planning has a dimension aimed at producing high-quality spaces, the second is that it is interdisciplinary, and the third is that it requires process management beyond being a tool for obtaining projects. To date, urban design has continuously evolved and is still evolving, both theoretically and in terms of practical experience. The book brings this evolution together with the Turkish experience in three main sections.
