In today’s world, where the visibility and political influence of Islam have significantly increased, the relationship between Islam and the built environment brings forth another research question: we need to consider today how Islamism, rather than Islam, plays a role in shaping the built environment (and how the built environment, in turn, shapes Islamism).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eArchitecture of the Nation analyzes Turkey’s transformation in the last twenty years from this perspective. Batuman argues that the AKP government should be considered a project of (re)nation-building, and within this framework, she focuses on the types of spatial strategies employed and the urban forms produced; starting from the premise that the built environment is one of the constitutive elements of the social, she undertakes to reveal the spatial construction of politics. To understand the demands, contradictions, and struggles inherent in the city and defined by spatial forms and scales, she carefully analyzes the interactions between the spatial and the social.
