At the beginning of the World War, I spent three months in Goldach on Lake Constance, and I dedicated almost all of that time to systematizing both my sometimes uncertain theoretical ideas and my practical experiences. In this way, a considerable amount of theoretical material was collected. This material remained untouched for almost a decade. It was not until recently that I was able to develop it further. Thus, this book came into being. I deliberately concentrated on the questions I posed regarding the beginning of art science, but these questions, when consistently developed, went beyond the boundaries of painting and ultimately of art.
