While the state opened modern factories to meet its needs, it also tried various ways to revive small tradesmen who had difficulty keeping up. To this end, the state prioritized promotion and attached importance to the international exhibition of domestic goods. The Ottoman Empire first participated in a London International Exhibition in 1851. It then participated in many international exhibitions in cities such as Paris, Chicago, Naples, Germany, Madrid, Pest, Barcelona, and Italy.

One of the exhibitions the Ottoman Empire participated in was the Vienna Exhibition. The state, which participated in this exhibition in 1873, had been preparing for it for about two years. During these preparations, the state had two books prepared and printed to introduce Ottoman architectural works and the clothing worn by its Muslim and non-Muslim citizens living in its territories during the exhibition.

This work, prepared by a committee headed by İbrahim Edhem Pasha, one of the Ottoman era’s Ministers of Public Works (Nâfia nâzırları), was published in Turkish (Ottoman), French, and German in 1873. This book, titled "Usûl-i Mî’mârî-i Osmânî" (Methods of Ottoman Architecture), was designed to introduce the Ottoman architectural style to the whole world at the Vienna exhibition.

Apart from the outer and inner covers, the book consists of fourteen sections and is enriched with pictures, plans, figures, and ornamentation. All the images in the book were used in common across the texts in all three languages. Given that it would be very difficult for the reader to connect the texts and images through the references in the texts, the simplified version of the original text in modern Turkish, the French and German texts, followed by the transcription of the original text, and the transcriptions and images of imperial edicts related to the book and exhibition, were added. Subsequently, a glossary, which we believe will be useful to the reader, was provided, and the original Ottoman text was added in the final section. The images (plates) in the book were placed at the end of the relevant sections of the simplified text.

This valuable work, which reveals the history of Ottoman architecture with its visuals, is being presented from library shelves, especially to architects, engineers, historical and architectural professionals such as tile and porcelain manufacturers, those engaged in fine arts such as illumination, and, more importantly, to everyone curious about the history of Ottoman architecture.
