sanat-tarihinin-tarihi
The History of Art History

In this book, written in a plain and concise language, the author traces the history of art criticism and theory from antiquity to the present day. Minor's aim is "to attempt to define what art history is, where it originated, what ideas, institutions, and practices form its foundation, how it has taken its current shape, and what critical methods it employs."
The modern academy, as a place of art education, emerged in late sixteenth-century Italy as a professional forum for artists, while also hosting theoretical discourse on art. The academy's influence, as a cultural and ideological phenomenon, has been powerfully felt throughout history; this influence is perhaps felt more strongly today than ever before. Whether the academy is an independent art organization under papal patronage like the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, a royal academy overseen by Louis XIV's officers, or a modern university, by its very nature, it influences artists and art historians in one way or another by setting agendas. These and similar topics are discussed in detail in the first part of the book. In the second part, which addresses art theories from Plato to the nineteenth century, history meets aesthetics, and the answers given to the question "What is art?" throughout the ages are scrutinized. In the third part, which includes evaluations of twentieth-century critical theories, history takes a backseat. Semiotics, deconstruction, Marxism, psychoanalysis, feminist criticisms, and multiculturalism are some of the approaches discussed in this section.
The book aims to reach readers who are new to art history and who are not content with merely being curious about art, but are also curious about why we say the things we do about art. It aims to convince readers who believe there is only one way – a textbook way – to talk about art that their perspective is reductive and authoritarian; and to convince readers who think art is entirely personal and everyone's opinion is equally valid that this belief is invalid. It invites the reader to grasp what makes art history belong to the humanities.
