Prof. Dr. Reha Günay's first significant encounter with the Selimiye Mosque occurred during a visit to Edirne in 1968, at the invitation of Prof. Doğan Kuban. Günay, who documented the structure as part of his architectural photography work, continued to visit and study the Selimiye Mosque repeatedly over the years. After deciding to write this book in 2013, he conducted countless observations, took photographs, and deeply researched the building's architectural structure over approximately 12 years. The resulting work is the product of over half a century of interest and a 12-year intensive research process.

The book examines the Selimiye Mosque within its historical and regional context, the relationship of its patron, Selim II, with Edirne, Mimar Sinan's architectural journey leading to the Selimiye Mosque, and the evolutionary process of Ottoman mosque architecture. The architectural dialogue between the structure and Hagia Sophia, its construction phases, structural system, spatial organization, ornamentation, and material usage are explored in separate sections. Numerous analytical drawings were prepared, particularly to explain the building's structural configuration.

The work also includes original evaluations on how Sinan resolved structure and space using graphic design methods employed in his time but forgotten over time. A brief history of the methods developed by masters, architects, and engineers for constructing domed structures since the Middle Ages is also shared with readers. In the book, where technical subjects are conveyed in a language accessible not only to experts but to all interested readers, Reha Günay speaks of Mimar Sinan and the Selimiye Mosque as follows:

"Sinan was an architect who created very important designs during his long chief architect period of fifty years. Especially mosques, the most important of the domed structures, were enriched by the schemes he developed. With the Süleymaniye Mosque, he interpreted the Hagia Sophia scheme within Islamic Architecture and comfortably solved structural problems. With the Şehzade Mosque, he brought to fruition the semi-domed scheme seated on a square support early in his tenure. He then developed the dome seated on a hexagon by repeating it many times. He created an extraordinary space in the Edirnekapı Mihrimah Mosque by pushing the limits of statics with the single-domed scheme seated on a square plan. With the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, he added the octagonal scheme to his experience. For a new mosque, it was clear in his mind what kind of design he would make. The huge dome of Hagia Sophia and Hagia Sophia being a symbolic structure no longer mattered to him. A structure with a dome as large as, if not larger than, Hagia Sophia, and not part of the Hagia Sophia scheme, could be a centrally planned structure seated on an octagonal scheme in the safest way. Thus, with great confidence, he created the Selimiye. This structure now rose on its own feet, not in the shadow of Hagia Sophia."

At the end of the book, there is a section titled "Natural Stones Used in Selimiye" written by Dr. O. Serkan Angı, a faculty member in the Department of Geological Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. This section makes a significant contribution to the study by examining the natural stones used in the structure from a scientific perspective.

With its texts accompanied by nearly 1,000 photographs and technical detail drawings, the book stands out as one of the most comprehensive resources published to date on the Selimiye Mosque, thanks to its extensive research process, rich photographic archive, and the author's interpretations. The book serves as a valuable reference for architects, engineers, art historians, and academics; it also attracts a wide readership interested in cultural heritage, history, architecture, and the human stories behind grand structures.

The book, prepared under the editorial direction of Gülçin İpek, features graphic design by Cem Günübek, illustrations by Ömer Okan, and copyediting by Mecit Demir.

WHO IS REHA GÜNAY?

Prof. Dr. Reha Günay, born in Istanbul in 1937, graduated from Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Architecture in 1960.
