Is there a theoretically consistent explanation for these three countries' similar reactions to what is called \"the West\"? How did these empires, defeated by the West, cope with defeat? After Defeat, drawing on the views of social theorists and thinkers in addition to constructivism, argues that tarnished states become hyper-sensitive to status anxieties and shape their foreign policies accordingly. It deeply examines and compares the cases of Turkey after World War I, Japan after World War II, and Russia after the Cold War.
