Rural and Future: Voices from the Countryside | Alternative Life and Architectures

The book “Rural and Future: Voices from the Countryside – Alternative Life and Architectures,” summarizing the work of the Architectural Design Studio, conducted between 2020 and 2024 at ITU Faculty of Architecture with the approach of “design by through research, research by design and architecture,” and the exhibition of the same name opened in September 2026, has been published by YEM Publishing.

Published with the valuable contributions of the Optimal Foundation, and prepared for publication by editors Ayşe Şentürer and Yeşim Armağan, the book's graphic design was done by Aygen İncel.

In the exhibition book, which bears the same title as the studio, “Rural and Future: Voices from the Countryside | Alternative Life and Architectures”, it is possible to encounter not an exact reproduction of the exhibition sequence, but rather an integrated presentation of both the exhibition and the studio. The design of the book likewise follows a layered approach and structure similar to the studio’s design methodology. On the one hand, the trajectories and layers of the studio and its design approach unfold; on the other, the sequence and content of the exhibition are presented. Accordingly, we structured the contents of the exhibition book as follows:

The book opens with the statement “The World Needs New Visions...”, which we believe summarizes well the necessity of the Rural and Future Project, and presents the studio that initiated the project, followed by the processes of the exhibition and the exhibition book.

The section “Rural and Future and the Studio” addresses “why we look at the rural through an idea of the future and how we construct this perspective,” briefly setting out our position and approach to the subject as a studio. Studio content begins to accompany the book here, including student seminars, manifesto texts and images.

The section “Rural Geographies – Voices from the Countryside”, within an approach that seeks to understand the rural from within, explains how the Guides, prepared before going to the site through a nine-part reading set, and the Field Study Trip conducted in situ were constructed. Here, the site is approached as a constitutive research environment in which the rural is reconsidered through direct encounters with its different scales, temporalities, forms of life and production, and human and nonhuman relations. Examples from the studio include maps, layered longitudinal sections and field-trip routes. The Field Study Trip Notes, presenting narratives of rural geographies from Anatolia, form a major part of this section. These are: #1 Şile, #2 Bandırma, #3 Menderes Basin, #4 Harran Plain, #5 Çoruh Basin, #6 Taurus Mountains, #7 Upper Euphrates Basin and #8 Lake Van Basin.

The section “Projections – Alternative Life and Architectures” addresses the emergence of the studio mottos and the applied tools and techniques of the design approach in relation to the question, “How can we take a position within discussions on Rural and Future?” In this direction, with regard to the Rural and Future Project, it explains how atlas cards and time-image montages, in short, projections, were developed; how profiles and life cycles were integrated into programmes and site plans, particularly through atlases and time-image montages; how atlas cards related to the processes of developing programmes and site plans; and finally, the relationships and processes through which programmes, site plans and architectural projects were developed. These explanations and discussions are accompanied by studio examples under the following headings: rural, future and site atlas cards; profiles and life cycles; architectural programme development; site plan development; and architectural project development.

The section “Another Kind of Life and Architecture Is Possible” functions as a kind of conclusion, reflecting on what we imagined, discovered and found, while presenting a series of atmospheric project images from the studio.

The section “Reflections – Two Keywords from the Studio, Three Keywords from You” seeks to broaden perspectives on the rural and the future through short invited texts by young academics who contributed to the Rural and Future Studio by participating in open juries over the eight semesters.

“Rural and Future Word-Hoard” presents a vocabulary of the rural and the future developed through the studio.
