Product Description

“The airplane is the symbol of the new age,” declares Le Corbusier in the introduction to this book, first published by The Studio in 1935. “A new state of modern consciousness. A new plastic vision. A new aesthetic.” Written with shouts of joy at the delightful and productive impact of the new machine civilization by the master architect of modernism, this book explores two themes.

First, it celebrates the sheer beauty of airplanes themselves, the functional planning of their parts and materials. The wingspan and propellers, the engine skeleton and ailerons, contrast with the sublime qualities of aviators: “Once they have soared with the wind in the air, they celebrate the wonder of their ascent.”

Secondly, comes the discovery of aerial views. Bird's-eye views “as a new function added to our perceptions, a new standard of measurement, a new basis for perception.” With unconscious irony, Le Corbusier announces that the airplane “accuses the city”: “Cities must be rescued from their misery; at all costs. Every corner must be demolished and new cities built.”

The dominating energy of the text is combined with a dynamic range of images, personally selected and placed by Le Corbusier. A dramatic image of an aircraft carrier bears the title, “And Neptune rises from the sea, adorned with strange ribbons, the weapons of Mars.” The result is the enthusiasm of early aviation and the new vision that the airplane brought to architecture.
