Metin Erksan, during a period of strict censorship, political pressure, and economic uncertainties, strived to survive and produce without compromising his creativity, despite the low-level, personal attacks from certain intellectuals who believed that the left, Marxism, socialism, and of course, cinema, were their sole monopolies, "awarding each other," a so-called "Istanbul cultural mafia," and their calls to deprive him of his freedom of thought, creation, and appreciation.

As someone who viewed the world through a Marxist lens but was not dogmatic, he was a lonely and misunderstood intellectual among other intellectuals, often standing against them.

It seems that much has been said and written about Erksan and his cinema; however, in reality, very few original comments have been made about him or his films. The perception that much has been said about Erksan and his cinema stems from the repetitive reiteration of the same observations and comments by different people, at different places and times, with only slight differences in phrasing, mostly by rote.

Anyone who systematically begins to examine the works and words said about Erksan will see that this claim is not unfounded. This work, by focusing on some of Erksan's films, reviews some of what has been previously written and said about this creative filmmaker, while also making new observations and presenting new claims with fresh approaches.
