Self, Family, and Human Development

This book brings together 20 years of work by Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı, an internationally renowned Turkish academic and one of the founders of social psychology. It is an expanded and updated new edition of the author's book Cultural Psychology, published ten years ago. In the book, which examines human psychology and social development from the perspective of what Kağıtçıbaşı calls the Majority World, the author investigates the effect of culture on personal development with a contextual-developmental-functional approach.

This study, which examines the nature of the self and human development from an intercultural perspective in the context of increasingly similar lifestyles due to globalization, corrects the West's dependence on and relativity of culture. While guiding cultural and intercultural psychologists to universalize psychology and make it less dependent on culture, it also serves as a unique resource for psychology and social sciences students.
