Mimar Sinan: An Ottoman Miracle

Mimar Sinan, the greatest symbol of Turkish culture and art history, compiled his memories in the manuscript source Tezkiretü'l-Bünyan, given in his own words.

This manuscript, penned by Saî Mustafa Çelebi, narrates events from Sinan's childhood to becoming chief architect and until the end of his life.

It describes the difficulties and hardships encountered during the construction of the great master's specially designed and built structures, including the Şehzade Mosque, the Kırkçeşme Water Facility, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the waterwheel in Mihrimah Sultan's garden, the Büyükçekmece Bridge, and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne.

Sinan, who also includes events and striking dialogues that unfold around the construction stories of these works, gives particular attention to his discussions with the world emperor Kanunî Sultan. This manuscript, which brings Mimar Sinan closest to us and provides important clues about his perspective and worldview, is the most valuable document we possess.
