Architecture in Today's Turkey

The story of the book "Architecture in Today's Turkey?" began in October 2015 with the conference "Discussing Architecture in Today's Turkey?" organized in collaboration with Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Architecture and the Building Industry Centre (YEM). During the conference, attended by over 25 architects from both academic and professional architectural practices, a broad discussion framework emerged, shaped by the changes occurring in the field of architecture in Turkey, existing problems, the relationship of architecture with daily politics, the roles of architects, conventional practices, alternative approaches, and the reflections of all these on spatial production processes.
At the end of the conference, a multi-dimensional picture emerged, ranging from architectural education to the professional environment in Turkey and worldwide, from the culture of architectural discourse to the relationship of the profession with power and political authorities.

This book was designed as a series of dialogues developed from the discussions that formed the agenda of the aforementioned conference. The dialogues, progressing with a question-and-answer method, were compiled and shaped into a book under seven subheadings: "Discussion Culture and Criticism; Power and Space Politics; Construction, Urbanization and Urbanization Dynamics; Alternative Approaches; Education; Professional Environment; Roles and Actors."
Bringing together the voices of leading architects from different fronts of the profession, this work generates a strong discourse regarding the architectural climate formed in the first quarter of the 21st century in Turkey, while also containing predictions and clues for the future.

As Istanbul Bilgi University Publications, we believe that this work, compiled by Dr. Evren Aysev, will make significant contributions to our architectural world.
