Product Description
The relationship between urbanization and radical religiosity is quite complex. This book explores how the dynamics of different forms of religious radicalism are produced, represented, and experienced in the city. The book attempts to establish a relationship between two important phenomena: the historical transition of a large part of the world's population from rural to urban life, and the resurgence of religion as a fundamental force shaping modern life in many parts of the world. Contributors to the book conduct transnational inquiry focusing on specific geographical regions, investigating the intellectual and practical problems created by radical groups, movements, and organizations. The authors focus on how extremist religious practices belonging to Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism contribute to the reproduction of global urban space. Their work demonstrates that viewing religious conservatism or doctrines as the primary cause of urban terror and violence is a very dangerous reduction. Instead, they argue that such phenomena should be understood as clear manifestations of the struggles of modernity.
