Product Description

Every account of the founding of ancient Istanbul, or Byzantion, invariably includes mention of "the land of the blind" opposite Chalcedon, the ancient Kadıköy. The bull statue in Altıyol, which has become a symbol of Kadıköy today, dates back to 1864 and pays homage to Chalcedon's most famous bull coins from antiquity, perfectly suiting Altıyol, which was known as "Sığır Meydanı" (Cattle Square) during the Ottoman period.

Chalcedon maintained close relations with its sister and neighboring city Byzantion, sometimes forming alliances and sometimes engaging in warfare, both during its period as an independent city-state and after Byzantium/Constantinople became the capital of the Roman Empire. However, to date, no monographic study has examined Chalcedon in antiquity from all perspectives. This book aims to shed some light on Chalcedon's distant past through its inscriptions, ancient sources, and coinage.
