Ancient Mesopotamian History: From the Beginnings to the Persians

The culture created in Mesopotamia, meaning "the land between the rivers," influenced regions beyond its birthplace, especially the Eastern Mediterranean, Syria, Palestine, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, and Anatolia, and the region has rightly been described as the "cradle of civilization." Mesopotamian civilization distinguished itself by creating a unique identity and style through its monumental architecture (royal tombs, temples, ziggurats) evident in its settlement centers, alongside the first city-states, first kingdoms, and first empires, as well as its painted pottery, writing systems, laws, and sculpture. Archaeological studies based on the region's geography and the findings obtained clearly demonstrate how much contemporary civilization owes to ancient Mesopotamia. In this context, Associate Professor Kemalettin Köroğlu, an archaeologist and ancient historian, takes into account the expectations of readers and students who wish to gain knowledge, and chronologically addresses the history of brilliant civilizations such as Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, Hurrian-Mitanni, and Assyria, deepening his work with maps, drawings, patterns, and photographs.
