Product Description

Prof.Dr. Necati Dinçoğlu, who has been thinking, drawing, and writing about sketches as a product of production, transmission, and accumulation processes in architecture for many years, has released his book titled Sketches – Drawing by Thinking, Thinking by Drawing, published by YEM Yayın.

The book, which begins with an introductory article by Aydan Balamir titled "Drawing by Thinking, Thinking by Drawing, Drawing Without Thinking in Architecture," also features a section by Fulya Özsel Akipek titled "Digital Sketch," enriching the content.

The book emphasizes that sketching, as the simplest and most straightforward way to visualize thoughts, is a medium of communication and primarily allows the designer to communicate with themselves. Necati İnceoğlu's commentary on the relationship between architectural sketch and design is summarized as follows:

“The Renaissance world used the old Italian word "pensieri" to refer to sketching in art and design. Its meaning is 'thoughts.' Indeed, the word 'thoughts' best describes sketching; 'drawn thoughts.' Similarly, sketching is 'thinking by drawing.'

There are computer programs that create impressionistic sketches, like taking travel notes by drawing, based on existing photographs. However, these are far from providing the fundamental characteristics of impressionistic sketches, such as mind-hand coordination and the reciprocal interaction between mind and hand, and the practices of thinking by drawing and drawing by thinking. At least for now, that's what I believe. Sketches are concrete products that visualize certain sections of the design process and thought. It is not possible to separate the design process from the sketching process. Therefore, I tell our students, keep drawing.”
