The Crossing of the Visible - Jean-Luc Marion

Jean-Luc Marion, one of France's most important living philosophers, influenced by thinkers such as Descartes, Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, and Emmanuel Levinas in his academic works, has written extensively on Cartesianism, phenomenology, Christian theology, and the philosophy of love (philosophie de l'amour).

In his book The Crossing of the Visible, he addresses the subject of the image within a phenomenological context. He examines many concepts laden with philosophical meaning and importance, such as painting, tele-visual imagery, and the idol-icon distinction.

According to him, painting is at the center of philosophy in general, and phenomenology in particular. For the study of painting provides an important basis for contemplating the conditions of the visible and the invisible.

"The visible offers itself to be seen. There is not yet a revelation (révelation), but what is at stake is already, perhaps, what will endure - perhaps later - the weight of glory imposed by a revelation [manifestation] that is always possible."
