Memory Palaces

What elements constitute a nation's memory? What great voids in a people's memory do customary and recurring anniversaries, holidays and celebrations, festivities, commemorative ceremonies, and eulogies fill? What kind of continuity do structures where memory is concretized, the city's architecture, monuments and museums, archives and cemeteries, and all sorts of places with historical meaning that evoke eternity, acquire within memory? How should a country's common heritage, myths, symbols, and language be analyzed?

Pierre Nora examines the conflicts and continuity of a nation from past to present, using the example of France. Through the concept of "places of memory," he masterfully reveals how "history," unlike the past, is reproduced in today's conditions:
