Product Description

Heybeliada is one of the places where Art Nouveau's applications in Istanbul's residential wooden architecture can be seen collectively. However, Ampir and Art Deco characteristics are also found in the buildings on this island. This study concerns selected houses in Heybeliada. After the 1984 earthquake in the Princes' Islands, many masonry buildings were destroyed, and wooden buildings, thought to be earthquake-resistant, were constructed in their place. Today, it is considered a significant opportunity that buildings believed to be first and second-degree cultural assets still survive. In some of the houses and mansions in Heybeliada, a synthesis of Art Nouveau, Ampir, and Art-Deco approaches is observed. Due to the wooden construction of the buildings, Art Nouveau and other approaches were implemented on limited elements, differently from masonry buildings. Because Heybeliada's topographical structure is steeper than Büyükada's, some of the selected buildings are quite difficult to reach. Unfortunately, many of these structures are on the verge of disappearing due to neglect.
