Product Description
Hoca Ali Rıza, one of the historical figures of Istanbul's Üsküdar district, was a much-loved art teacher among his students due to his modesty, contentment, and gentle personality. He became a renowned artist in 19th-century Turkish painting with his many works, including Istanbul landscapes, moonlit night paintings, and various views of Salacak and the Maiden's Tower.
As a young man who studied at Kuleli Military High School and then Mekteb-i Harbiye, he worked with his friends to establish an art studio at the school, thereby beginning his first Western-style art education. Hoca Ali Rıza, who took lessons from important painters of the period as well as Süleyman Seyyid, kept the easel his teacher gifted him throughout his life. Hoca Ali Rıza taught art lessons to students of the Zâdegân class, established for the children of the palace circle, princes, and female students, designed porcelain for the Yıldız Porcelain Factory, and prepared albums for art education in schools.
The fifth book in the series "Great Masters of Turkish Art," Hoca Ali Rıza, offers insights into the life of a thoughtful painter with a great interest in music. It provides clues for evaluating the painter's approach to landscape painting from both philosophical and technical aspects, taking the reader on a journey full of colors into Hoca Ali Rıza's inner world. This journey, extending from the Maiden's Tower to Kandilli, from Tarabya to Istanbul's important public spaces and coffee houses, from island landscapes to moonlit nights, establishes a connection between the reader and Hoca Ali Rıza.
