Product Description
I start with a simple premise: to truly see one city, you need another. If a person moves to a city to live, they must learn the daily practices of that city's life. This means looking at the city with attention, curiosity, and persistence. And when one looks closely at a foreign city, the silhouette of another city always appears before them. This is one's own city. Sometimes it is the city where they were born and raised, sometimes one they lived in for a while and developed strong feelings for, a city that has taken its place in their mind as an image, to which they are bound by a sense of belonging. One feels as if they are only now truly beginning to understand their "own" city for the first time. The familiar and close gains new meaning when viewed from a distance and through the lens of the different.
This book is perhaps an attempt to juxtapose the efforts of Hong Kong and Istanbul to integrate into global processes over the past thirty years. The emphasis is placed on Hong Kong; in a sense, an attempt is made to enable the reader to view Istanbul through the lens of Hong Kong, a port city at the other end of Asia that has undergone similar globalization processes in the last thirty years. I hope that the differences as well as the similarities between the two cities can offer a new perspective when evaluating Istanbul.
