We believe that the inhabitants of Ikiztepe were among the first to settle in the Central Black Sea Region. We should immediately state that the Chalcolithic Age culture in the coastal area is not limited to Ikiztepe alone. There are other settlements alongside Ikiztepe. The difference between Ikiztepe and other contemporary settlements identified in the area is that Ikiztepe has been the site of extensive archaeological excavations. Very few of the others have been excavated, and their excavations are not comprehensive. With its continuous excavations since 1974, Ikiztepe is a center where the oldest data regarding local architecture has been obtained. The architectural data obtained here reveals its history extending into the Chalcolithic Age. Based on the architectural data obtained from the continuous archaeological excavations of Ikiztepe, we can comfortably say that Ikiztepe is perhaps one of the earliest, but most important, places where the local architectural tradition was formed; it is also the only exemplary settlement for the Central Black Sea Region's coastal area.
