Product Description
YEM Yayın has published a new book titled "The Culture of Building - Human Behavior in Construction Companies and on Construction Sites," authored by Vedat Özkan.
"The Culture of Building" complements YEM Yayın's "Construction Practices Series" books prepared by Firuzan Baytop and Turhan Uyaroğlu. It supports the process described in the other books in the series, which focus on construction and building, with a "human-centered" narrative.
Vedat Özkan summarizes his purpose in preparing "The Culture of Building," which is a first in its field, and the content of the book as follows:
"I wanted to try to understand what behaviors construction sites, which are unlike any other line of business, exhibit, how and why, and to share what I learned during this process. This is because construction companies and construction sites will be the destination or workplace for many students, especially those in civil engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, etc., after graduation. For this reason, this book serves as a reference for them to more easily understand the effects and results that emerge in the context of 'human-culture-perception.' This is because many topics here contain 'unique situations that can only be seen on construction sites.' The book, which also includes 'behavioral' data that will enable institutions, organizations, and masses to better understand the construction processes of buildings, also contains experienced information that will allow managers working in construction companies and on construction sites to re-evaluate the methods and approaches they apply to human emotions and thoughts. Moreover, it is also an important reference for those working on sociology and crowd behavior..."
Some of the topics examined and conveyed in the book are listed as follows:
How is the act of waiting perceived on construction sites?
- How should the dominance of meaning be on construction sites?
- In what direction do human resources reflect on a construction site?
- What results do imaginary experience and imaginary personality lead to?
- How should the politics, law, and bureaucracy of construction companies be?
- Can aggressive structures emerge?
- How does the capital value attached to foreign languages affect the conditions on construction sites?
- Why are there no monopolized construction companies worldwide?
- What was meant by "there is no escape from mental tension on construction sites"?
- Where do the future and dimensions of construction extend?
"Currently, the majority of blue-collar and white-collar workers on construction sites are men. We are living in an era where every child born today is expected to be a university graduate when the time comes. While the replacement of manual laborers, whom we categorize as 'workers' on construction sites, by university graduates points to a near future, how it will take shape is unknown. However, symptoms such as educational disappointments, excessive gaming, obesity, and over-reliance on drugs are sabotaging men today. As is known, construction sites are extremely dynamic and stressful work environments. 'In stressful situations, many of us re-organize our understanding of what is happening to protect our self-perception.' It has been observed that the sabotage of the dominant male population employed on construction sites by technology and the re-organization of understandings are rapidly reducing the number of qualified male workers to be employed on construction sites. For these reasons, technological tools and equipment will be able to maintain the number of people to be employed on construction sites at a certain balance. The most important breaking point of this balance will be the perspective of construction sites using technological tools and equipment towards the human element."
