What is Not Taught in Schools in Construction Applications - 14th Edition

A new edition of "What Is Not Taught in Schools in Construction Practices," prepared by Firuzan Baytop to clarify topics she believed were lacking in architectural, engineering, interior design, and design education, has been published by YEM Yayın.

The book aims to provide readers with essential practical solutions for construction site applications that are not taught in schools.

Firuzan Baytop, drawing on over 50 years of international construction site experience, explains easily applicable construction methods, supported by drawings and diagrams, that are not covered in technical books or schools. In this regard, the book serves as an indispensable guide, supplementing theoretical knowledge acquired in schools that may prove insufficient in professional life.

Through the book, which she prepared by utilizing the practical experiences of various institutions and individuals in numerous construction processes in Turkey and abroad, Firuzan Baytop addresses her younger colleagues, in particular: "Undoubtedly, we learn many things from books and our instructors in schools. However, what is learned in schools is 'knowledge.' What we need on construction sites are application methods, which we call 'experience.' I share my construction site application experiences with you so that you can apply correct practices, avoid losses of time and money, and contribute solid, functional, and beautiful structures to our country."

This book consists of comprehensive texts based on the short, illustrated explanations in the author's book "Wrongs-Rights in Construction Practices," and thus complements them. Therefore, it is recommended to use the two books together.

WHO IS FIRUZAN BAYTOP?

She graduated from the Department of Architecture at GSA (today Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) in 1948. Together with three friends, she won honorable mentions and awards in many architectural competitions; she won first prize in the Elâzığ Government House competition.
In addition to many private constructions, she built the Istanbul Municipality Saraçhanebaşı 1st Block Apartment; Emlâk Bank Atatürk Boulevard Block Apartment, Bursa Bazaars, Ataköy Beach, and Ataköy 2nd District. Starting in 1965, she managed the construction of many facilities for the Alarko company, both domestically and internationally, until her retirement. While working as a Construction Consultant and a member of the High Advisory Board at the same company, she retired voluntarily at the end of 2000. Firuzan Baytop, whom we lost in November 2021, worked as a member of the Material Committee and the Editorial Board of the magazine "Material in Architecture" at the Istanbul Branch of the Chamber of Architects; she gave lectures at various universities, meetings, and seminars; and published research and books on architecture, construction, and site management.
