Product Description

All works done for ornamentation on architectural products and all kinds of utilitarian objects are called decoration. In environments where Islamic culture is dominant, an intense decoration program is encountered. The ornamentation designed by the decorator includes repeatable modules that can be applied from small areas to large areas. This situation, especially for geometric ornamentation, may vary depending on the nature of the application material. It is observed that a common decorative taste has emerged in different geographical regions and times with repeatable design schemes on architectural elements produced with wood, brick, stone, etc. materials.

Stars and polygons formed by broken lines repeating at appropriate angles have been applied in all surface decorations. The repetition of forms reveals the concept of infinite continuation, which is seen as a characteristic feature of Islamic ornamentation. Hexagons formed with equilateral triangles and stars formed with hexagons, creating infinitely continuing motifs, constituted the most suitable type of ornamentation for the decoration of large surfaces encountered in Islamic architecture.

Prof. Dr. Yıldız Demiriz's book "Geometric Ornamentation in Islamic Art" is one of the first catalog studies in which geometric motifs used and still being used in ornamentation in the Islamic world are identified and shown with examples of structures or works.

In the book, the identification and grouping of motifs were taken as a basis, without any limitation regarding period, material, and technique.

The work, which is a reference source for Islamic Art research, has been re-examined for its new edition and several additions deemed necessary have been made.
