Product Description
The İstanbul Research Institute launched its İstanbul Studies Series, which publishes original research on İstanbul’s history, archaeology, historic topography, and architecture, in 2011 with the book İstanbul'un Eski Venedik Yerleşimi ve Dönüşümü (The Old Venetian Settlement and Transformation of İstanbul). The series consists of studies prepared as theses and by independent researchers. The first book in the series deals with the Venetian settlement, which is of great importance for the historical topography of İstanbul during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, but which has been little researched to date. It is the first comprehensive study, prepared as a doctoral thesis by Aygül Ağır, a lecturer in the Department of Architectural History at the Faculty of Architecture of İstanbul Technical University, that reconstructs the Venetian settlement, located on the southern shore of the Golden Horn, a significant focal point where commercial activities that sustained the daily life of Byzantine and Ottoman İstanbul were concentrated, on the basis of historical topography and Venetian and Ottoman archival documents.
