Right to the City and Urban Justice

The pursuit of urban justice, undoubtedly, goes beyond merely attempting to provide individual solutions to specific injustices; it possesses a quality geared towards collective initiative.

This pursuit also involves efforts to bring into coherent frameworks the plural and fragmented actions and discourses of those who aim to eliminate unjust urban conditions and fight for this cause.

Until recently, the pursuit of urban justice has emphasized—with the weight it deserves—the neglected spatial dimension of social movements aimed at "justice," social justice, change, and transformation.

In other words, "understanding justice" is possible not only by focusing on the relationships between social, economic, and political structures and conditions, but also by focusing on the spatial connotations of these relationships.

The urban/spatial justice approach embodies the characteristics of both a "theoretical concept," an "empirical form of analysis," and a "strategy for social and political action."

This work, authored by Selahattin Yıldırım, addresses the concepts of the right to the city and urban justice with their theoretical and practical dimensions.
