From Kondoskali to Kumkapı

Kumkapı, a district in present-day Istanbul rarely mentioned outside of its tourist taverns, was a vibrant and colorful Istanbul neighborhood until the mid-1960s, where Greeks, Armenians, and Turks lived together, and minority cultures predominated.

Although its connection to the sea is almost completely severed today and it is one of the most damaged districts of the city, Kumkapı, which has hosted one of Istanbul's oldest ports since the Byzantine period and the Armenian Patriarchate, defies its unfortunate fate with Orhan Türker's work "Kondoskali'den Kumkapı'ya, Eski Bir İstanbul Semtinin Hikâyesi" (From Kondoskali to Kumkapı, The Story of an Old Istanbul Neighborhood).

"Kondoskali'den Kumkapı'ya" (From Kondoskali to Kumkapı) is the latest gem in the "Witnessing History" series, featuring detailed information on the architectural structure of the district, photographs compiled from private archives, and news reported in Greek newspapers published in Istanbul.
