Product Description

Cuba is a country that attracts the world's attention on a wide variety of topics. This book examines an unusual subject: Sustainable Urban Agriculture in Cuba. For over 20 years, the Cuban people have been providing their food through ecological methods from urban gardens.

After the collapse of the Soviets, Cuba, which until then had been practicing industrial agriculture, selling its produce to the bloc, and receiving oil and its by-products in return, faced an unusual problem: a lack of oil. It no longer had the oil to plow its fields or transport its products to cities. Sustainable Urban Agriculture in Cuba describes how the food crisis was turned into an opportunity. The lack of oil is a future that will signify a transformation that all countries in the world, starting with the poor, will face soon.

Sustainable Urban Agriculture in Cuba does not just describe urban agriculture. The pre-revolution, the revolution, and the years leading up to the collapse of COMECON and afterward are described with striking examples, from its governance to its institutions and even its foreign relations. Legendary heroes of the Cuban Revolution, from the Castro brothers to Che, are featured in examples with their concrete actions.

On the other hand, it surprisingly shows how cooperative experiences can succeed with healthy functioning, the ways to their productivity, and what workers can achieve when organized in a horizontal formula.

One of the book's instructive texts is the benefits of the integration established between urban gardening and the education system.

The author, Sinan Kunt, is an academic living in the USA and continuing his faculty position at Dickinson College. Despite this, he critically examines various Cuban policies, especially the embargo imposed by the USA, in a very objective manner. He observes the urban gardens in Cuba on site during his many travels and conducts interviews.

If you are planning a trip to Cuba, this book offers examples of urban gardens you can visit, along with the names of their managers and the municipalities where they are located.
