Product Description
For more than fifty years, art cinema has meant imagining cinema beyond Hollywood for audiences, directors, and critics. Despite this, it has been a concept surprisingly absent from academic interest since the 1970s. For the past thirty years, it has also been in a state of global expansion, producing cross-geographical, transnational aesthetics and meanings. Global Art Cinema seeks to answer how such a complex category can be approached. It aims to explore the hybrid identity of art cinema and questions central to current film studies. This work, which aims to focus on art cinema as both an active aspect of global film culture and an indispensable part of its critique, outlines the new forms and boundaries of art cinema. From the emergence of new waves in East Asia and Latin America, to the re-strengthening of European film, the success of Iranian directors, and the rise of film festivals that shape world cinema, the work centers on the inherent internationality of art cinema.
