Los Angeles is one of the most unconventional topics in urban and city planning literature. For an observer equipped with traditional concepts of city, urbanity, and urbanism, Los Angeles is not a city. It certainly has a definable center. But, unlike London, Paris, or even New York, seeing this center does not mean one has seen Los Angeles. What makes Los Angeles Los Angeles is that it is an agglomeration of neighborhoods standing on a network of highways, almost solely thanks to private car ownership. This giant metropolis cannot be comprehended through familiar means like walking. Just as one cannot comprehend a country by merely observing and accumulating experiences, comprehending LA can only be done through its representations such as maps, books, and guides. Therefore, it does not surprise us that a 20th-century architectural guide for this city resembles a Modern Architecture history book more than a mere guide.
