Lydian Archaeology: From Gyges to Alexander the Great

In his work, Lydian Archaeology from Gyges to Alexander, written as a result of long-term and extensive research, Christopher H. Roosevelt paints a general picture of the regional archaeology of Lydia, which is of key importance for understanding the power relations between East and West in ancient Anatolia. The book consists of two parts: a systematic discussion of Lydia's settlement history, followed by a catalogue of finds unearthed in studies conducted in various parts of the region. Roosevelt presents a brand new synthesis of the archaeology of Sardis, the region's ancient capital, and previously unpublished data, offering a fresh perspective on understanding Lydia, a region considered difficult due to limited archaeological and historical records. The book, which compiles data from surface surveys, stylistic analyses of finds in local museums, ancient texts, and environmental research, is a significant contribution to the literature on Lydian geography.
