The Poetics of Space

In Gaston Bachelard's "The Poetics of Space," a work that has inspired philosophers, architects, psychologists, literary figures, and critics since its publication, opening new perspectives in every reader's mind, Bachelard demonstrates how our perception of home and every image of shelter shapes our thoughts, memories, and dreams.

In this work, Bachelard examines how space is filled, frozen, and solidified by time/mind through language. According to him, language assigns meaning, while poetic imagination resists these processes of meaning-making, allowing being to unfold. Philosophy, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, physics, biology, neurology... all now become secondary to the immediate, or in other words, to poetic imagination. "The Poetics of Space," representing a new turning point in Bachelard's epistemology, is the name given to the attempt of thought, displaced in the crucible of change and continuity, to construct a poetic place for itself through the dialectics of language-reality, time-space, finite-infinite, interiority-exteriority, and large-small.
