Mies Van Der Rohe and the Skyscraper: Pioneers of Modern Architecture

More than half a century after the construction of Mies's first American skyscrapers, there has been no radical change in this field. It could be argued that he created the archetypal configuration of the skyscraper, one that is impossible to surpass. It was also through his work that the skyscraper gained recognition as the most direct expression of the conditions that created it. Therefore, because those conditions persist, the world's metropolises continue to fill with Miesian prisms. Moreover, the fundamental planning and design rules of those years are still valid. What has changed during this period consists only of certain stylistic preferences. This is probably the ironic revenge of an architect who has countless opponents, many of whom curse his architecture and its urban consequences.
