Histories of Architecture

This compilation aims to provide a brief history of Classicism, Modernism, and their sources through the examination of twenty-two prominent buildings. Each study brings the materiality of the building, its placement on the plot, its interiority, light, construction, and materials into dialogue with the writings, doctrines, or theories that shaped its design. This process continues until the building ceases to be merely an object and gradually transforms into a project once more – a bundle of hypotheses open to the "possibilities" of its era. Can architectural history be approached in different ways by moving from object to project? The studies that constitute this work attempt precisely this: 22 separate building monographs are brought together according to their functions, and each building reveals its specific program and the conjuncture that enabled its emergence. Thus, the era is not expected to explain the building; instead, the progression moves from the building to the era.
