Reflecting on the Spice Bazaar

Ö. Sıla Durhan and Yekta Özgüven present a meticulous and detailed study, extending from a research project to a book, on the Egyptian Bazaar. This bazaar, built as one of the structures within the New Mosque Complex, has continuously functioned, albeit with varying intensity, as a herbalist or spice market from the 17th century to the present day. Its significance lies in its ability to physically and economically endure various interventions, including demolitions, constructions, and additions, in Eminönü—one of Istanbul's most vibrant commercial areas for centuries—yet it has remained largely unresearched until now.
