The book, prepared in 1982 in parallel with the "Modern Turkish Architecture" seminar and exhibition organized at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in partnership with the Middle East Technical University and the University of Pennsylvania, was published in 1984 as a publication of the same university. The second edition of the book was published in English by the Chamber of Architects Publications in 2005, and was translated into Turkish in 2007. The book includes two thematic articles: the state of Turkish architecture before the Republican era and the Early Republican era shaped by national identity (Yıldırım Yavuz); the 'discovery' of modernity with the new nation-state (Afife Batur); the difficult periods when World War II could have occurred (Üstün Alsaç); the arrival of international style with liberal and democratic efforts (Mete Tapan); pluralism treatments and dramatic events after 1960 (Atilla Yücel); sequential housing developments (Yıldız Sey) and drawing the social context (İlhan Tekeli).
