Modern and Exile

Bernd Nicolai's book Moderne und Exil, originally published in German in 1998, has been translated into Turkish by Yüksel Pöğün Zander and published by the Chamber of Architects Publications. When it was first published, the book was unique in that it was the only work on early Republican era Turkish architecture written using archival documents from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. As Nicolai revealed through the documents he presented, much of the information that helped us understand many unknown projects and constructed buildings in Turkish architecture was hidden in Central European archives. The book was a first for Turkish architectural history, as well as filling a significant gap in German architectural history.
