Product Description
The author criticizes the mosques built today as imitations of Sinan and the failure to construct creative and original modern mosques. In doing so, the author defines modernity, traces it back to the Ottoman Empire, examines the social structure of society, and attempts to uncover the reasons for "our inability to be modern." The book also meticulously examines numerous movements of renewal (modernization) from the Tanzimat Edict to the present day. Providing examples from the Renaissance and Mimar Sinan, the author attempts to draw a comparison between Europe and the Turkish world.
Furthermore, the author evaluates Turkish Architecture from the 19th century to the present day, analyzing the social impacts of globalization and the EU process, and attempts to explain the current state of architecture. In the book, we also see the author assessing Divan Literature and Traditional Turkish Music.
The author, providing examples of original and creative European architecture, divides mosque architecture into three main groups: "Imitation Mosques, Stylized Mosques, and Original Mosques." For instance, the final section of the book features 18 modern mosques built between 1956 and the present day.
