“It would be useful to state that the ideas developed in this book are a continuation of my book titled On the Spiritual in Art (Über das Geistige in der Kunst). Since I set out in this direction, I must continue on this path.
At the beginning of the World War, I spent three months in Goldach near Lake Constance, and I spent almost all of this time systematizing both my theoretical ideas, which sometimes seemed a little vague, and my practical experiences. In this way, I collected a considerable amount of theoretical material.
I did not touch the aforementioned material for almost ten years. However, recently the opportunity arose to develop this material, and thus this book came into being. Here I particularly intensified the questions I had previously asked regarding the beginning of art science, but when consistently developed, these questions completely transcend the boundaries of first painting and finally art. Here I aimed only to point to this path, to establish certain methods of analysis, and in doing so, to take into account the values that emerge as a result of synthesis.”
