Lost in the Forest

Was it a city, a forest, a geography that he was in, or a formula, a language, a book? Of course, he couldn't ignore this possibility either: Death. He clasped his hands and began to review the evidence. First, he remembered the sudden breeze that had emerged when he had just thought of death. Then there was this saffron-colored dust on his boots. He had to add the smoke appearing on the horizon to the evidence. This could have been due to a war. And finally, the letter he now realized was in his jacket pocket. It began in a somewhat old-fashioned way. It asked how he was doing and stated that he could convey any problems to her. Who was this? His teacher? The woman who rejected him? His father, from whom he hadn't heard in years? Who? He leaned against a tree to consider the possibilities. He was very tired. The letter fell from his hand.
